Arduthie knit for African orphanage

Arduthie School has embarked on a whole school eco-enterprise to provide knitted blankets for an orphanage in Africa. The project which involves all the children from P3-P7 learning to knit or crochet also involves mums, grans and anybody else in the school community who can knit or crochet.

Every child P3-7 is learning how to knit and hopefully each child will be able to produce at least one knitted square which will form part of a cot blanket. Primaries 1 and 2 are obviously too small to take part but they will be organising the decoration of these with ribbons and helping to assemble the finished products. Nursery will be wrapping and posting the parcels.

The objective is to make most of these squares from either rattled down wool or left over wool which people may have lying around at home. The ribbon decorations will be made from the ribbon ties which are sewn into the shoulders of jumpers to facilitate hanging, as most people cut these off and throw them away.

Obviously teaching 25 plus children in a class to knit is quite a daunting task but we have a bank of volunteers to assist with this.

Hobbycraft in Aberdeen have donated over 1000 squares, knitted by their regular customers, to the project.

Everyone who volunteers to participate and can knit as few or as many squares as they wish. Squares should be 20 stitches x 36 rows garter stitch or stocking stitch, about the size of a CD case. The school will be collecting and assembling the squares into cot blankets until the end of April. Anyone who wishes to contribute should deliver their squares to the school office. All donations will be gratefully received.
