Burns Association AGM
The Glenbervie Burns Memorials Association held their Annual General Meeting this week at the Grassic Gibbon Centre.
The organisation serves an important function in preserving and maintaining, all the memorials and sites associated with Robert Burns and his forebears in Glenbervie.
The first committee was formed in 1948 and since becoming an Association in 1969, the members have worked tirelessly to promote the Aberdeenshire and North Angus memorials to Burns.
In the Year of the Homecoming 2009, the Association created a new plaque for the Burns Mausoleum at Glenbervie, which was unveiled by the actor John Cairney.
This plaque was dedicated to Lawrence Burness, (1910-2004) in recognition of his major research and work on the genealogy of Burns and his descendants.
Edith Stuart who was President of the Glenbervie Burns Memorial Association stood down from the post, but will continue as Secretary. Edith was also a past President of Aberdeen Burns Club
Edith said: “The office of President carries no chain of office, no monetary reward, no wide acclaim. What it does bring is a very, very great honour. The honour is having access to, and being associated with, a sacred place, not publicised enough at home, but known worldwide. A place visited by all those who would follow the story of Robert Burns.”
Dave Ramsay, heritage singer-songwriter, has been appointed as the new President of the Association and said: “I was honoured to be invited, and delighted to accept. I am looking forward to continuing the good work of Edith Stuart, and past Presidents, including Lawrence Burness, as he and I both share Arbroath as our birthplace.”
Dave has an extensive knowledge of the heritage of the area, and was Project officer for The Father of the Bard, a two year project working with people with learning disabilities from Forest View Centre, Stonehaven, funded by the Heritage Lottery fund and Aberdeenshire Council.
It was during this research that the story of the Burns plaque at Hillside was discovered.
This year a new commemorative plaque will be installed at Hillside, continuing the work of the Glenbervie Burns Memorials Association.
Montrose Burns Club and the Glenbervie Burns Memorials Association are working in partnership to celebrate the Hillside event on September 9 and also the centenary of the Burns statue in Montrose on August 11.
