Celebrity contributions to Gourdon charity auction night

A St Andrew’s night charity event to raise funds for the Maggie Law Maritime Museum, has just been given a tremendous celebrity boost.

TV celebrity chef Rick Stein, and five times Olympic gold medallist Sir Steve Redgrave have donated autographed copies of their books for a charity auction on November 30.

Rick Stein visited Gourdon for one of his TV series, and some of the recipes in the book feature seafood dishes with Gourdon produce.

The Sir Steve Redgrave contribution is particularly apt, as the Gourdon men who crewed the Maggie Law, would have had to be skilled oarsmen, in saving lives from dangerous seas.

The St Andrew’s night event is a joint venture between Ruth and Alex Grahame of Hornblowers, Gourdon, and Dave Ramsay of the Howe o’ the Mearns Heritage Association, and the guest speaker will be Councillor Bill Howatson, who is also Chair of NHS Grampian.

Ruth and Alex said: “We’re looking forward to hosting this event in our harbour view restaurant in support of wonderful local cause.”

David Doig, Distillery Manager of Fettercairn and Tamnavoulin distilleries, will provide guests with a whisky tasting session, and bring his wide experience of the history and production of our whisky industry.

Entertainment will be provided by Ray Milne, Dave Ramsay, and local piper Tom Roberts. For Ray and Dave, all their material on the evening will feature songs from their Tales of Gourdon and the Maggie Law CD, with other Scottish songs of the sea.

Dave Ramsay said, “This is set to be a great night, with the hope of reaching the target of £1,000 to help towards the development of the Maggie Law Maritime Museum. It is pleasing to stage this event at Hornblowers in Gourdon, in order to celebrate St Andrew, our patron saint who was a fisherman. A real celebration of all things Scottish

Hornblower’s reputation for good food, combined with a local good cause and charity event, has meant that only a few tickets are left for November 30.”

Tickets available from, Hornblowers, Harbour Bar or direct from Dave on 01569 750730.
