Gala needs community involvement

ALTHOUGH the summer seems a long way off to most off us at the moment, volunteers are already busy preparing for August’s Portlethen Gala.

The gala, in aid of local children’s charity Befriend A Child, was revivied in 2010 after an absence of several years and has enjoyed a turnout of around 1,000 visitors for the past two years.

The gala will this year take place on August 25, from 12pm-5pm, in the grounds of Portlethen Academy and nearby Bourtree Park, and the Gala Committee are already busy making preparations for the day.

Chairman Alan Inglis told a recent meeting of Portlethen and District community council that the committee are hoping to make the 2012 gala the biggest and best yet, and are hoping to attract as much community involvement as possible.

He said: “We have managed to get quite a few organisations coming on board, a police mobile unit will be there as well and there will be a cycling awareness stall.

“The Gala is a great opportunity for local organisations to showcase their services, raise awareness about their work or raise funds with a fun stall, so we really hope the people of Portlethen get behind the event – it is their Gala and we want them to be involved.

All the usual stalls and entertainment are also expected at the gala, including live music, a BBQ and a beer tent.

Further information about the 2012 event is also available at www.portlethengala.co.uk.
