Help needed to get pool ready

The Friends of Stonehaven Open Air Pool are appealing for volunteers to join the work squad preparing the Pool for its official opening on Saturday May 25.

“Few people appreciate just how long it takes to get everything looking good for the opening,” said David Culshaw who is helping organise the volunteer workers this year. “We have a long list of tasks including power washing, repairing harling, scraping and repainting, refurbishing the chute – and that’s just the outside work! There’s also cleaning and painting to be carried out inside, particularly in the changing rooms.”

To make sure that the Pool looks its best in time for Opening Day, the Friends are starting work on Monday February 18, when there will be an open afternoon from 1pm. Work will then continue each Monday and Wednesday, with additional work carried out on Saturday mornings from early March.

David added: “anyone who has some time to offer will find they don’t need any special skills – just overalls and a smile! We all really have fun too and always make new friends.”

Stonehaven Open Air Pool is unique: an Olympic-size (50m) Pool with clean, filtered seawater heated to 29˚C (84˚F) set within a beautiful Art Deco listed building, it offers healthy fun for children of all ages, quiet sessions for adults and midnight swims. This summer, it is Scotland’s ONLY heated open air pool.

The Friends of Stonehaven Open Air Swimming Pool is a charity, originally formed by the local community to ensure the future of the Open Air Pool when it was threatened with closure in the 1990s. The Friends now work in partnership with Aberdeenshire Council to maintain and operate the Pool to the highest standards.
