New online disability guide

A NEW online guide for disabled people in Aberdeenshire will be launched on Monday, March 4.

Aberdeenshire Council has teamed up with disability organisation DisabledGo to produce a 1000 venue access guide to the area.

The guide will feature detailed access information for a wide range of buildings and venues across Aberdeenshire, including shops, banks, restaurants, council buildings, public transport and tourist attractions. Some of the Aberdeenshire attractions which will feature in the first phase of the guide include Balmoral Castle, the Grampian Museum of Transport, Macduff Marine Aquarium and Haddo House.DisabledGo currently provides access information for over 100,000 venues across the UK and Ireland. It will enable people to find out not only whether venues have adapted toilets or parking close by but also specific details such as whether there are tactile or Braille markings in lifts or on doors, the dimensions of toilets, the positioning of fixtures and fittings and whether they can request information in large print or Braille. The DisabledGo-Aberdeenshire guide will be available on the ‘Looking Local’ service on the red button on your TV, so will still be accessible to those who do not have a computer at home.

Aberdeenshire Council’s Chair of Social Work and Housing Committee, Councillor Karen Clark, said: “I very much welcome the launch of this guide, which I hope will give disabled people confidence to access a range of activities across the area. Aberdeenshire has a huge range of brilliant venues, historic visitor attractions and fantastic restaurants and providing accurate information about accessibility will, I believe, encourage people to go and visit more of them.”

For more information about the guide, please contact Dean Eales, Partnership Administrator, on 01438 842710 or at dean.eales@disabledgo.com.
