Reader in Residence encouraging children across Aberdeenshire
Aberdeenshire Council has appointed children’s novelist Deborah Leslie as its new Reader in Residence, as Children’s Book Week kicks off around the country.
The post is one of five residences awarded by the Scottish Book Trust and Creative Scotland, and as Reader in Residence, Deborah will work with Aberdeenshire libraries to promote the enjoyment of reading for all age groups and provide opportunities to talk about books and reading until July 2013.
The residency will be launched during Children’s Book Week which kicks off at the end of November is an annual celebration encouraging school children to enjoy reading and writing for the past 80 years.Deborah’s published work includes three collections of short Doric stories. She has also written two children’s novels and a play – The Clock on the Waa – which was produced and performed in the Lemon Tree in Aberdeen.
Events will be held throughout Aberdeenshire in a range of community venues, including sheltered housing, care accommodation, village halls and pre-schools.
The residency will promote an awareness of the reading choices available from libraries including fiction and non-fiction, poetry and local history, using the written and spoken word to explore the local culture and heritage.
Last year saw an 80% rise in library membership for children and this summer saw a further 25% increase.
