The countdown is on for Open Air in the Square
Organisers of Open Air in the Square have had an anxious, busy and frustrating year but now the clock is ticking and there are only days left before the committee hope to pull off, what is deemed to be, the second biggest Hogmanay celebration in Scotland.
As well as the main concert in the Market Square, and of course the famous Stonehaven Fireballs, there will also be an ice rink situated at the Leisure Centre which will be open from tomorrow (December 29) until Tuesday (January 1). There will also be a fairground with rides for all ages as well as side stalls throughout the day.
The fireballs will, as usual, take place on the High Street and the swinging ceremony will start at midnight on December 31 until 12.25am which will then be followed by a spectacular firework display from the clifftop overlooking the harbour.
The separate event, Open Air in the Square, will be showing the fireballs on large screens in the Market Square as well as providing entertainment from the world famous Red Hot Chilli Pipers, local artist and San Diego award winner Colin Clyne, Beatles tribute band “Revolver” and many others from 8.30pm.
During the day there will be attractions such as street dances, storytellers, The Lindsay School of Dancing and Blazin Fiddles.
To get entry to the Market Square all ticketholders must exchange their tickets for wristbands from the Royal Hotel reception beforehand where drink tokens will also be available to buy as bar staff in the Square will not be handling cash on the night.
A token booth will be available on the night but buying in advance will ensure less time queuing. The 64 security staff will be enforcing a strict search policy and may be using detectors to find hip flasks as no alcohol will be allowed to be taken into the Square.
Those with a ticket can enjoy all the attractions including rides on the fairground.
Roads in the vicinity will be closed off and car parks will be open at Carlton House, Queens Road, Mackie Academy, Railway Station, Forest View, Mill O’ Forest School and Carronhill School but if at all possible, organisers say you should avoid taking your car to the event.
