Volunteers for Award Scheme

a meeting to be held at the Community Centre in Stonehaven next month will discuss the setting up of a Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme in the town.

Organisers are hopeful that parents of the current second and third year pupils at Mackie Academy will be able to attend on Tuesday, March 12, at 7pm as well any other adults in the community who may wish to get involved.

Currently there are award Schemes running in Stonehaven but these are organised by groups such as the Air Training Corps and the Sea Cadets and only members of these groups can participate.

There was an open group run for some time at Mackie Academy but, owing to staff changes and other priorities at that time, it stopped operating.

Mackie have been approached regarding the start of this new venture and appear to be interested in getting involved again.

Main advantage of an open award scheme is that young adults from any part of the community can participate as they do not have to be affiliated to a particular organisation. By starting a group in Stonehaven it is hoped to encourage young adults who live in the area to attend who may otherwise not be able to make it up to Portlethen where the current group meet.

The current Portlethen group has approximately 70 participating members with a very high percentage of them coming from Stonehaven.

Lynn Buchan, Aberdeeenshire Council, senior community learning and development worker Portlethen has been heavily involved in the progress of that group but has identified the need to encourage a new one in the Stonehaven area.

A healthy turn-out at the meeting to will allow for a wide spread of volunteers.
