Young musicians shine

editorial image

Last Wednesday eleven talented young musicians from S2 through to S6 took part in the local heat of the Rotary Young Musician competition at Mackie Academy.

The audience listened to some well-known and some not so well-known pieces on piano, violin, saxophone, oboe, baritone horn and guitar.

Three independent judges listened intently to the performances making notes to feedback to the musicians.

Introducing the evening, Acting Rector, Jennifer Macdonald, gave a short description of each piece of music.

After what the judges described as a very difficult decision, they awarded second place to violinist, Ross Hull, who played three pieces the last of which he composed himself.

The overall winner of the event was Robbie Western playing “Waterfall” on guitar. Robbie will now go on the next stage of the competition.
