Christmas Auction on the Green
The third Stonehaven auction on the green is set to take place in December with money once again being raised for the neonatal unit in Aberdeen.
Once again a historical piece from Stonehaven will go under the hammer with the funds raised from its sale going to the neonatal unit.
Stonehaven’s auction on the green has so far raised £200 for the unit and organiser Phil Mills-Bishop is hoping to add to that with the latest piece set to be auctioned off.
Those attending the auction on December 8 (moved from December 1 due to unforeseen circumstances) will have the chance to bid on an invitation card which was issued when Viscount French visited Stonehaven in June 1917 to inspect the home Guard Soldiers. The invitation card was issued to the VIP guests on the day who were allowed to meet Field Marshal Sir John French as he inspected the troops outside the Railway Hotel.
The invitation card for auction was for a Mrs Brown, who lived at The Avondale in Gurney Street. Framed along with the card is a newspaper article from the Viscount’s visit and a portrait of Sir John French. The newspaper article featured in the Stonehaven Journal on June 28 1927, it does not contain any pictures of the event and Mr Mills-Bishop is asking if anyone has pictures of the Viscount’s visit to get in touch.
The Station Hotel has also donated a meal for two at the hotel to go along with the lot as there is a strong connection between the visit and the hotel. Anecdotal evidence suggests the Railway Hotel provided refreshments of beer and champagne during the inspection and Murray Gordon, the current owner of the Station Hotel whose grandfather fought in the 1st World War, is willing to continue this tradition by offering a dinner for two as part of the auction lot.
Community Councillor Phil Mills-Bishop, who is the driving force behind auction on the green, is determined to raise money for the neonatal unit as it is a cause very close to his heart as two years ago this December, his daughter gave birth to his twin grandsons at 24 weeks. Tragically one of the twins, Aiden, passed away however his brother Kai survived and was cared for by the neonatal unit and on December 3 will celebrate his second Birthday.
Phil’s daughter, Kirsty has now set up a group on facebook where people can share their stories of miracle babies who were cared for at Aberdeen neonatal unit and she is making a scrap book of stories to provide hope and comfort to parents of babies being cared for on the unit.
The group can be found at www.facebook.com/groups/112582108895447/permalink/
As well as the historical lot for Aberdeen neonatal unit, a number of other lots will be available at December’s auction on the Green.
The auction will take place on Saturday December 8, in Stonehaven Bowling Club. From 11am -1pm will be jewellery, glass and light furniture and from 1:30pm- 3:30pm ceramics, curios, paintings and prints will be auctioned. Items can be viewed on Friday December 7 from 5pm.
