Thursdays Coffee Morning is back up and running in Laurencekirk and donated £2,000 to several good causes across the Mearns.

The group started up again last Thursday, January 7, after a short break across the festive period when they gave seven community groups a share of £2,000.

Recipients were: Laurencekirk Lunch Club, Rebecca’s Wheel Chair, Laurencekirk Out of School Club, Fettercairn Senior Citizens Christmas Lunch, Laurencekirk Christmas Lights, Laurencekirk Church Roof Fund and Friends of Denlethen Woods.

Money was generated from coffee mornings held every Thursday at the Laurencekirk Community Centre from 10am until 11.30am at 148 High Street. The popular and well-attended mornings give friends, neighbours and anyone else who happens along, a chance to get together and share a laugh and a story or two.

The group is run by dedicated volunteers. An array of home baking is provided, along with the tea and coffee, and all that is asked in return is a small donation of two pounds per person.

The coffee mornings were first held in what is now the Red Cross shop, before moving to the community centre in 1999, and every year the profits raised are disbursed to local causes, suggested and put forward by the attendees themselves.

In 2013 and 2014, £2,000 was shared among local community groups with £1,000 in each year. The cheques were handed out in the last coffee morning of 2015 where all volunteers were invited.
