Mearns Public Art Steering Group has been awarded funding from Aberdeenshire Council for the creation of public art work.

The artwork will appear in Laurencekirk and the Mearns villages connected to Mearns Academy.

This ‘Per Cent for Art’ funding is sourced from the Council’s planning gain/obligation money. Mearns Public Art Steering Group comprises representatives of Mearns Area Partnership, Howe o’ the Mearns Heritage Trust, Mearns Community Council, Mearns Youth Forum and Community Learning and Development Department.

The ‘Per Cent For Art’ fund is directed to support professional artists with an existing record in producing public works of art. Following the Steering Group’s selection and interview processes Alan Potter from West Kilbride has accepted the Mearns Public Art commission. Alan initially trained and worked as an engineer before changing career to become a very successful professional artist focusing on community and public art projects across the length and breadth of Britain.

The subject of the Mearns Public Art works is broad, being “the heritage of the Howe”, and it is proposed to create a trail of mosaics within the settlements connected to Mearns Academy, with a major piece being located near the Laurencekirk Railway Station.

It is planned to introduce Alan Potter to the Mearns community through a series of talks and practical workshops where local people’s thoughts and ideas can be gathered and developed.

The Steering Group are delighted with Alan Potter’s appointment and look forward to attracting participation from everyone interested in the project.

The group have said community participation is vital in creating works which connect with the thoughts and feelings for local heritage. Everyone is welcome to join in the project that is due to start mid-September, information of which will be advertised in due course.
