Two years after Benholm Kirk ceased to be a place of worship it was bought by the Scottish Redundant Churches Trust to be used by the community as a venue for wide ranging events, social, cultural and creative. At the same time an informal group, “The Friends of Benholm Kirk”, was formed to support the Trust.
In carrying out their objective, in June this year the Friends, in celebration of the Diamond Jubilee of Her Majesty the Queen, presented over a very successful three days, “Benholm in Bloom”, a floral display in which each exhibit depicted a month in the year. Indeed, so well received was this event that the Friends decided to produce a calendar of the “Year in Bloom at Benholm Kirk”. The official launch took place in Benholm Castle on Wednesday and now the calendars will be on sale daily in the Kirk, price £5 with the proceeds going towards the continuing care of the historic building.
The opening meeting of Mearns Coastal Parish Church Guild will be held in Johnshaven Church on Monday, October 8 at 2.30 pm when the speaker will be the Rev. K. Petrie from Craigiebuckler Church, Aberdeen. All welcome.
At the September meeting of the Benholm and Johnshaven Community Council concern was expressed at the impending withdrawal by Stagecoach from certain daytime journeys on route Number107 (Montrose-Stonehaven) and the complete withdrawal in November by W.M. Nicoll from the Montrose to Stonehaven route. The implementation of those decisions would have meant that between 8 am and 4 pm there would be no buses serving Johnshaven directly from the Square.
However, Chair, Don Marr, retuned from last Thursday’s meeting of Aberdeenshire Council’s Bus Forum in Stonehaven with the promising news that, from November, Stagecoach will operate Service Number 107 for a trial period of six months. During this time passenger numbers will be monitored before a final decision is taken on the future of the route.
The next meeting of the Community Council will be held in the Village Hall (small) on Wednesday, October 10 at 7 pm. Items for the agenda should be in the hands of the Chair, Don Marr, Old Schoolhouse, Seaview Terrace by Monday, October 8.
