THE Bay fish and chip shop in Stonehaven has been named the Best fish and chip shop in Scotland.

The Bay, owned by Calum Richardson and his wife Lindsay, will now compete against nine other regional winners from across the UK for the coveted title of the nation’s Independent Takeaway Fish and Chip Shop of the Year.

Mr Richardson, who has been in the industry for 13 years, said: “We’ve been aiming for this award since we opened the shop five years ago and to finally be named the region’s best fills me with pride.

“We try to source all the produce we use locally so the success we will have on the back of this win will benefit the whole area.

“I’ve got a great team at The Bay with my manager Stuart Adams having worked with me since the beginning. We’ll certainly be cracking open a bottle of champagne.”

The competition is organised by Seafish and in the past the title has resulted in a sales increase of up to 100% for the winner.

Shops were judged during unannounced visited where product quality, customer service, food preparation procedures, hygiene, innovation, staff training and development, promotional activity and approaches to sustainable sourcing were all examined.

Nikki Hawkins, foodservice and events manager at Seafish, said: “The UK’s fish and chip shops are a national institution, which this award has recognised now for the past 24 years.

“This competition has been our fiercest yet with each finalist facing stiff competition. The high standards and quality displayed by the UK’s top 10 fish and chip takeaways is testament to the high standards of the industry and committed approach to a sustainable future.”

Next month all the finalists will travel to Norway where they will learn about the supply chain of fish from the country to the UK to help them further improve the sustainability of their product.

The winner of the UK title will be announced at the grand final of the National Fish and Chip Awards 2012 held in London in January.
