This week Dr William Malcolm, a son of the Manse, from the Banffshire village of Aberlour, launched his two latest books on the Mearns author Lewis Grassic Gibbon.

The books Lewis Grassic Gibbon: The Reader and Lewis Grassic Gibbon: A Revolutionary Writer were published on April 7 by Capercaillie Books.

Dr Malcolm has been a director of the Grassic Gibbon Centre at Arbuthnott since its founding and completed a PhD on Gibbon at Aberdeen University in 1982. His doctoral thesis was then consolidated and published in 1984, to great acclaim, in book form as A Blasphemer and Reformer: a study of James Leslie Mitchell /Lewis Grassic Gibbon.

Dr Malcolm is pivotal to the centre’s provenance and academic output and is the first port of call for contributions to academic publications and TV and Radio programmes. Only this week, he gave an expert perspective on Gibbon in the BBC’s excellent three part production Scotland: The Promised Land and the programme’s producer, Laura Mitchell attended this Book Launch.

Dr Malcolm has promoted Modern Scottish Literature as a teacher, writer, broadcaster and consultant for the past three decades and his enthusiasm and admiration of Gibbon continually grows as he strives to understand fully and promote his genius and to give the Mearns author his proper place not as a parochial Scottish writer but as an important contributor to international literature.
