Last Friday saw a packed Mackie Academy Assembly Hall to celebrate another successful trip to the West coast of the USA.

Iain Macdonald, Faculty Head of Mathematics, led the party of 45 students and five staff during the October break.

The Wild West Trip is now becoming a regular opportunity for Mackie Academy learners with trips departing in October 2016 and 2017 filled to capacity.

Last month saw participants experiencing searing temperatures of more that 100 degrees fahrenheit as the group spent three nights in Los Angeles where they enjoyed tours of LA, Hollywood, Beverly Hills, and Venice Beach.

En route to Las Vegas the party stopped at a tradition 50’s Diner as well as visiting Calico Ghost Town. Three nights were spent in this unique city where the party stayed in the Circus Circus hotel on the world famous Strip. During their stay in Vegas, participants enjoyed the fabulous Fremont Street Experience, a walk up the Strip taking in the Bellagio Fountain Show and the highest thrill rides in the world at the Stratosphere.

The bustling city experiences were now to come to an end as the proper “Wild West” experience was about to begin. A night in the town of Williams, on the famous Route 66 preceded a jeep tour in the stunning red rock town of Sedona …. a geologist’s dream, before un unforgettable 3 night stay at Saguaro Lake Ranch.

The stay at the ranch provided the opportunity to kick back, relax, and enjoy the stunning scenery and hospitality. However, this was not to be the case as everyone enjoyed swimming, kayaking, horse riding and various other activities provided by the ranch staff. An early Halloween party and Scottish ceilidh evening joined by many friends of the ranch ensured every minute at the magnificent setting was enjoyed.

And so last Friday’s celebration evening brought the experience to a fitting end where the trip DVD was shown and copies were sold for charity. Iain Macdonald thanked parents/carers, pupils and staff for their continued support in this huge undertaking. He also stressed the benefit to various charities over the years from monies raised at evenings.
