AN Aberdeen-based charity is looking to expand into Aberdeenshire.

Befriend a Child, which is based in Aberdeen, aims to provide children, who are identified as suffering or at risk, with a positive, stable adult relationship.

The charity has been doing work in Aberdeen since 1975 and has in that time, provided support for vulnerable children in the City, the charity has also won a number of awards including, The Queen’s award for voluntary service.

Befriend a child takes on volunteer befrienders who are then matched with a child who has been identified as at risk, they then spend time with their matched child at least once a fortnight, this creates a stable relationship for the child who otherwise, may not have that in his or her life.

The children who befriend a child work with are referred to the charity for a number of reasons and are among the most vulnerable and deprived within the community.

Currently Befriend A Child has funding to take nine referrals from South Aberdeenshire through the Aberdeenshire Alcohol and Drugs partnership.

The charity is therefore, hoping to recruit befrienders from the area, not only for Aberdeenshire referrals but also to be matched with children from the South of Aberdeen who are currently on the waiting list.

Befriend a child hope to, in the next 18 months, set up a base in Stonehaven which would be used for volunteer training, interviews and recruitment in South Aberdeenshire.

The expansion to Aberdeenshire will take Befriend a Child out of it’s traditional base however the charity feels the befriending service is: “Much needed for all young people who require it in the North-East.”

However, as a charity organisation all expansion is subject to funding, there are a number of fundraising events for the charity happening in the near-future.

On Saturday 30th July the charity are holding a bagpack at ASDA at Portlethen and on the 28th August Befriend a Child are holding a Gala at Portlethen to raise funds for the charity.
