Mackie Academy Badminton team has become the lucky recipient of a £600 community grant from Scotmid Co-operative.

The team will be heading to Chinese Taipei in May 2014 to compete in the International School Sports Federation World Games, and the grant awarded by Scotmid’s North Regional Committee is to assist with the purchase of kit and bags for the team.

The team, consisting of Mark Leith S5, Jacob Reynolds S6, Matthew Duguid S4 and Sam Muir S3, was selected to represent Scotland in the World Games after winning the Scottish schools’ badminton tournament in Ravenscraig last year.

With nine national junior titles among the boys and an international title for Mark, the Mackie Academy team is set to do well in the competition which will see them battle it out on the court against teams from all over the world - including Armenia, Brazil and China itself.

Mark’s mum, Annette Leith, will be accompanying the boys to Taipei as head of delegation.

Annette, from Stonehaven, said: “On behalf of the delegation, I’d like to say a big thank you to Scotmid for supporting the team. We are really delighted to accept this grant and it means a great deal to the boys.

“We will still require to undertake a great deal of fundraising for the trip, but this grant means that we can rest easy knowing the team will be well turned out when we arrive. The boys can also focus on training hard for the games and making Scotland proud.”

Scotmid’s North Regional Committee is made up of eight, elected members. The committee meets regularly to consider grant applications from community groups, charities and non-profit organisations from Perth to the Northern Isles.

Representing Scotmid’s North Regional Committee, chairman John Anderson, from Montrose, said: “It is always a pleasure to be able to help local organisations through our Community Grant Fund where we can.

“Encouraging communities to take part in different activities and interests is increasingly important and something that Scotmid is delighted to support. I wish the Mackie Academy Badminton team the best of luck in Taipei and look forward to hearing how they do.”
