Folk Festival tickets going fast

Things are hotting up for the Stonehaven Folk Festival from July 10-13, with all three-day weekend tickets now sold.

Festival chairman Charlie West said: “We have had enquiries and sales from around the world, including America, Canada, Norway, Denmark and Germany as well as many more from closer to home.

‘‘Online sales have been very popular but popping in to the local shop, Celtic Chords, is still one of the best way to get tickets.”

Tickets are still available for all three concerts with a lot of interest in the Saturday night headliners – Patrick Street. This is the first concert in Scotland since 2002 for this Irish supergroup.

The festival will also hold a comprehensive series of workshops over the weekend with everything from Junior Ukulele and the Junior Jammers for P5-7 children to master classes with some of the festival guests.

Following the success of the Big Sing, a chance to join a group of people learn some songs sing and have fun, there will be a “Wee Big Sing” for younger participants this year. A full workshop programme is now available on the Festival web site.

The Aqua Ceilidh also promises to be something special this year as the pool celebrates 80 years of being open – festival organisers are developing ways to help celebrate this occasion and get a lot of people involved although details still to be announced. The other exciting news is the theme for the World Paper’n’Comb Championships has been set as “Tartan” to celebrate the Year of Homecoming.

A few of the highlights this year will include: Thursday night (July 10) - Stonehaven Folk Festival weekend starts here with the opening Session in the Upper Town Hall, a chance to meet old friends and make new ones, a mixed tunes and singing session – everybody welcome.

Friday (July 12) - The big Concert Ceilidh night in the Town Hall starts at 7.30pm, featuring Mischa Macpherson Trio, Lady Maisery, Nuala Kennedy Band and Hoolichan Ceilidh Band. Sessions in local pubs and Open Mike night.

Saturday (July 13) - things gets going at 11am with workshops, sessions, afternoon Open Stage at the Plainstones (Town Square), Evening concert in the town Hall. There will also be a late night Singers Concert (new for 2014) upstairs at the British Legion. There will also be the Steenhive Big Sing workshop for grown-ups and a Wee sing for younger performers – a chance to join a group of people and sing together, no experience is necessary and everyone has fun while learning some songs and harmonies. Don’t forget the World Paper’n’Comb championships.

Sunday (July 14) - Aqua Ceilidh in the open air pool, and during the afternoon there is a Tradition Bearers concert hosted by Geordie Murison, with four great traditional singers Hector Riddell , Alison McMorland , Martin Carthy and Moira Craig, followed by the Chorus Cup competition. The Festival closes with an evening concert in the Town Hall featuring Gavin Marwick’s Journeyman Spectacular – a 10 piece extravaganza incorporating Bellevue Rendezvous, Up in the Air and the Old Blind Dogs Allstars .
