Laurencekirk will soon have its own state of the art gym, after local man Gary Fairweather was granted planning permission to create the facility in the business park at the north end of the town.
Gary, a qualified personal trainer, has obtained planning permission for the gym, studio and creche, together with male and female changing rooms.
The facility will cover an area of 600 square metres. The gym will be 16m x 12m and the studio, which will be the home to 40 different classes a week, will measure 14m x 12m.
The ambitious project will be built on ground next to Journeycall and will be run by Gary and his girlfriend Sally Henderson.
Speaking this week, Gary was delighted that permission has finally been granted: “The base will go down this week. The steel structure will be delivered on May 14 and should be up by the end of the month.
“We hope to have the building up and all fitted out inside ready to open by the end of August.
“Everyone is talking about the gym in Laurencekirk and the Mearns. We have never had a facility like it in the area before.
“The gym will have £100,000 of equipment in it. For example we will have five running machines, five bikes and five cross trainers.
“We are creating a gym which we hope the whole of the Mearns will want to use.
“We are installing the best of equipment and we are confident that we will be able to compete with other gyms in the area.
“The gym has been over a year in the planning. I originally hoped that Aberdeenshire Council would build something which I could lease from them.
“Nothing was happening and in the end I decided to purchase the land from them and build it myself.”
Gary says that already 1,100 people have expressed an interest in becoming members of the new gym.
“We are looking to sign people up on monthly memberships and our rates will be competitive with other (council-run) gyms in the area.”
Gary already has his charges structure worked out with special rates for couples and families (up to four) included. The facility will be open 7am - 9pm seven days a week.
