Laurencekirk future event well attended

The first of two Community Planning Days to help shape the future development of Laurencekirk was held at the weekend (Sunday, February 28).

Organisers said the event attracted over 60 local residents and they also received positive feedback.

The event, organised by independent planning charity PAS (Planning Aid Scotland) on behalf of the Laurencekirk Development Trust, started with a walking site visit of the old Laurence Kirk Academy site, followed by a drop in exhibition and two workshops facilitated by PAS volunteers.

The workshops looked at both ideas and aspirations for the old academy site as well as options for the land beyond the site which has been allocated for housing and business.

Mike Robson, Laurencekirk Development Trust Secretary, said: “These events are an important opportunity for Laurencekirk and its long-term development and we would like to thank PAS for organising such a well thought out day and helping to facilitate the workshops.

David Wood from PAS said: “There was a great turnout at the event and we were especially pleased to see people of a variety of ages coming along to make their views known.

“I would like to thank everybody for attending and look forward to the second event where we will be presenting some feedback and options for the area.”

Asecond event will be held on Sunday, March 13 from 11am to 2.30pm.

It will be a follow up public exhibition setting out ideas and options for the Old Academy site and land beyond, and a discussion workshop looking at Laurencekirk as a whole based around resident’s ideas and aspirations for the future in order to develop a community vision for the town.

The Laurencekirk Development Trust is proposing to acquire the former Mearns Academy site on behalf of the community and will present a business plan to Aberdeenshire Council to be considered at a meeting of the Policy and Resources committee in April.

The Trust are also conducting a business survey to identify the needs of local firms for a new business park and are looking to hear from as many companies as possible.

LDT/PAS are very keen to hear from secondary school children who may like to use the online survey.

The survey is available at www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/GV8G5HC.
