A hop skip and a jump closer for pupils

Dunnottar Primary School have moved one step closer to achieving their dream playground after receiving two lots of funding this week.

At the Kincardine as Mearns area committee on Tuesday the school was awarded £4000 from the top up budget and towards their planned playground that is described by the school to give ‘greater outdoor opportunities’.

Pupils also went to Stonehaven and District Lions Club on Monday evening to tell them about their playground where they were donated £500.

Pupils and staff at the school have been working hard to reach their £27,000 target that will pay for a regeneration of their dated playground. Dunnottar Primary School teacher Caroline Duncan, who was speaking at the meeting on Tuesday, said the playground will not only be used for Dunnottar pupils but it will also provide a safe area for children living nearby to play in as well as nursery children who they will invite along to play in the area.

Miss Duncan said quite often at weekends and after school the playground is busy with children using the space because there is not anywhere nearby that children living in the area can play safely.

The school is hoping to promote active, imaginative and healthy play for children by including an activity trail and climbing wall as well as an artificial grass surface. The also hope to resurface the existing surface to make a slightly softer ground and therefore repair all of the holes and uneven areas.

Every pupil at the school had a chance to design what they would like to see in their new playground and each class voted for their favourite three designs, which the school will be, and have been, taking into consideration when deciding exactly what they would like the playground to be like.

Miss Duncan said the pupils have been incredibly excited and helpful with the fund raising and are working incredibly hard. They will be bag-packing at the Allardice Street Co-op on Saturday December 1 between 9am-2pm to raise more money for the playground.
