Bumper crowd at 176th show

THE sun shone on the 176th Fettercairn Farmers' Club Show on Saturday, encouraging a bumper crowd approaching 5,000 to turn out and give the event their support. Entries were down in the cattle and horse sections, but remained static in the sheep classes.

Show secretary Lennox Hair described it as "a great day" with the weather suiting the livestock as it wasn't too hot.

Show convener Alison Argo was also delighted with the success of the day and paid tribute to the members of the committee for the "fantastic job" they did in the run-up to the event.

She also praised the team of young helpers, including members of Mearns Young Farmers, for their valuable assistance.

Supreme Champion in the cattle section was Drumsleed Paige, a seven year old Simmental cow, entered by Gerald and Morag Smith of Drumsleed, Fordoun.

Paige was breed champion at the Royal Highland Show, breed champion at the Fife Show and inter-breed champion at the Angus Show.

Reserve champion was the Cross Cattle champion Reidhall Shakira, shown by Reidhall Farms, Stracathro.

Overall champion in the horse section was the Highland Pony champion, Morven of Coynach, sired by Edindurno Glen Clova and shown by Lynne McDonald, Mains of Coynach, Tarland.

Reserve was the Shetland Pony champion Kerrystone Theodore, sired by Kerrystone Kelly and shown by Ken and Anne Scott, Braes of Kerrystone, Dundee.

In the sheep section, overall champion was the champion in the Suffolk class, a ewe shown by Ross Fotheringham, Oldmill, Strichen.

Other cattle champions were: Aberdeen Angus: Bielack Blackbird Hots, a heifer sired by Nightingale Defiance and shown by Neil F. Massie & Son, Bielack, Aboyne.

Limousin: Stewart Brown, Roepark, Little Brechin with a bull born on or after September 1 2008.

Any other pure breed: Ruth F. Hutcheon, Burnside Croft, Fyvie with a cow in milk.

Horse champions: Horses under Saddle and Horses in Hand: Steven Livingstone, Kerrfield Cottage, Fettercairn with Ballywater.

Ponies in Hand: Charlish Harelferg House Stud, Bushfarm, Crathes with Harelferg Spring Field.

Ponies under Saddle: Susan Kilgour, Woodside, Ythanbank, Ellon, with Rotherwood Picado.

Mountain and Moorland Ponies: Katie Blewitt, Dundarach, Stracathro with Solus of Marisland.

Small Mountain and Moorland: Lynneann Cameron, Inchgray Farmhouse, Fettercairn with Paddock Dianthus.

Clydesdale: Sandy Aitken, Newton Cottage, Memus with Redcastle Pretty Amazing Grace.

Sheep champions: Charollais male and female: I & F Brownlie, St Katherines, Fyvie.

Blackface male: Michelle Main, Ashburn, Little Brechin. Female: R.C. Myles and Son, Dalbog, Edzell.

Suffolk female: Graeme Christie, Newton of Balquhain.

Cross Sheep: W. Mather & Sons, Shandford, Brechin.

Texel: Drumchapel Estate Co, Chapleton of Menmuir, Brechin.

Jacob Sheep: L. McKendrick, Bankhead Farm, Cupar.

Any other breed: I & F Brownlie, Fyvie.

Overall winner of the Wool on the Hoof and Fleece competition was R. C. Myles, Dalbog with the fleece on a Blackface ewe. Reserve on the hoof was a Jacob lamb by G and N. Reid, Carnoustie.

Top fleece was a Cheviot hogget fleece from Mike Littlejohn, Auchronie, Glenesk and Michelle Main was reserve with a Blackface.
