Work has begun on the old Duthies Well in Stonehaven and is scheduled to be completed by the end of March.
As previously reported, over the years the old well has fallen into disrepair.
Thanks to the Rotary Club of Stonehaven however, the refurbishment work has now started.
Work on the stonework by Hillside Slaters Ltd of Montrose has been started and the mortar joints have been raked out in readiness for repointing.
The name etched into the stones has been cleaned ready for the gold leaf which will make the name stand out more clearly.
The unpleasant task of cleaning out the inside of the well was completed last weekend with the assistance of Ewan Patterson Gardening Services and up to eight bags of old cans and glasses, plus other unmentionable items, have gone to the local tip.
The new oak door has been made by Ron Leiper Carpentry, and the new hinges and other fittings are being trial fitted ready for installation.
A spokesperson said: ‘‘The new hinges, the front plate and spout and new handle of the well have been manufactured by Hutchinson Plant Services Ltd.
‘‘This work could not have been planned and started without the help of funding from the Kincardine and Mearns Area Committee Budget, the Our Place Fund through Be Part of the Picture Scheme and the Rotary Club.’’
A grand opening is being planned for mid-April.
