The Stonehaven Land Train is finally operational, having taken its first journey on Monday after months of delays and uncertainty.
The train was to be up and running last month but registration problems caused delays outwith the control of the organiser, Stonehaven Town Partnership (STP).
STP chairman Douglas Samways told the Leader about seeing the first journey head off: “It’s great, and what a relief. I’m so pleased it is up and running and that Stonehaven can benefit from the efforts.
“We hope to encourage more people who visit the castle to head into the town and help promote local business.”
We spoke to Clare Rae, from Falkirk, who has spent the summer holidays in Stonehaven with her husband and sons Cameron (4), and Harris (20 months).
She said that they had hoped to get a ride on the land train before they left, and they were just in the nick of time as Monday was their last day.
Clare added: “We found out about the train being up and running from the Mearns Leader Facebook page, and we had to come down for the first trip.
‘‘The boys love trains, and they are very excited.
She added that the rainy weather wouldn’t dampen their excitement: “We don’t care about the weather, we have a roof over us and we’re going to enjoy it anyway.”
