A takeaway in Gourdon has been nominated for a top national award, ‘The Choice Chip Awards,’ for the second year running.
The Hornblowers in Gourdon, situated under the main restaurant beside the picturesque 19th centry harbour, is battling it out against 623 other establishments across the UK.
Owners Alex and Ruth Grahame said they were delighted at being nominated for the competition which is being run by the National Potato Council.
Alex said: “We’re over the moon that our customers enjoy our chips so much they have nominated us.
“This is the second year running we’ve been put forward for the award which is really an amazing tribute to our staff as they help make the friendly atmosphere in the takeaway and the restaurant which customers come back for.
“Our menu changes every day, as it depends on the fish landed that morning at Gourdon and Peterhead, so it’s great that people return again and again.
‘‘We source our potatoes for our chips locally too from W.M. Fraser, as we have some of the country’s best produce on our doorstep.
“We get delicious Agria potatoes which we cut ourselves and double fry in beef dripping for fluffy and crispy chips - most other chip shops use Markies or Maris Piper but we believe the flavour and look of the Agria is an all round winner.
“We’d love to be at least the top takeaway in Scotland so get voting!”
The competition is part of Chip Week which runs from February 17 to 23 and votes can be registered at www.chips.lovepotatoes.co.uk.
A total of 35,000 people voted in last year’s awards and more than 1.6 million tonnes of potatoes are made into chips every year in the UK – weighing the same as more than 14,000 blue whales or 4,000 jumbo jets.
More than 250 million fish and chip meals are sold in the UK each year- with the dish outselling Indian takeaways by two to one.
