Katrina announced as Hannah Dyson winner announced
Six years ago, an eight year-old sports-mad Katrina Carr went to watch her big brother Jack taking part in his Taekwondo training and, after being initially daunted at the physicality of the marital art, decided that she would like to try the sport herself.
Six years on, the fourth year Mackie Academy pupil is training six days a week, winning numerous cups and medals and competing all over the world.
For Katrina, Taekwondo is not just a hobby, it’s a way of life and the local teenager, who competes for Scotland, has now been awarded winner of 2013’s Hannah Dyson Award for her contribution and dedication to the sport.
Part of the Boydell Blackbelt Academy, Katrina trains all across Scotland. Blackbelt Katrina also coaches Taekwondo to children aged 4-12 in Stonehaven twice a week and recently won the Boydell Blackbelt Academy Student of the Year Award. Recently, the 14-year-old won Gold in the Dutch Open, Bronze in the European Championships, Silver and Gold in the World Cup in Brighton and was the overall champion in the aged 12-14 category, to name just a few. Katrina’s array of glistening awards echo the time and commitment she’s put into the sport.
When asked how she felt upon getting the news that she had won 2013’s Hannah Dyson Award, Katrina humbly said: “I was very surprised when I got the call to say I’d won the Hannah Dyson Award.
‘‘I didn’t expect it - I’m really happy, though, and looking forward to picking up my award.”
Despite spending the majority of her time punching and kicking in the air, Katrina’s mum, Fiona, said she’s very modest and her feet remain firmly on the ground: “Katrina works really hard and is absolutely committed and gets great support from the club and the school, as well as from us.
‘‘Katrina’s guidance teacher, Mrs Stalker, who nominated her for the award, always makes sure she is up to speed with work she might miss while away at competitions and is very encouraging. The instructors at the Boydell Blackbelt Academy are fantastic too, as are her team mates - everyone is extremely encouraging.
Katrina, who wishes to pursue a career in physiotherapy and become a Taekwondo physiotherapist, will be collecting her prize at the beginning of March.
The Hannah Dyson Award is given to a young person who is under 18 years of age and who has achieved an outstanding youth achievement, excellence or merit in a range of different areas. The final winner is decided by Stonehaven and District Community Council. The award commemorates popular Netherley teenager, Hannah Dyson, who died in 2005 after a long battle with Cystic Fibrosis.
