Mike Rankin

Mike Rankin

*veteran journalist Mike Rankin is the new editor of the Deeside Piper.

He comes to Royal Deeside from north east Fife where he spent 10 years at the helm of the St Andrews Citizen newspaper - a Johnston Press title serving the Home of Golf and surrounding area - prior to being appointed head of news (North East Fife) within the Fife Free Press newspaper group.

Mike is also editor of the Piper’s sister newspapers in Stonehaven, the Mearns Leader and Kincardinshire Observer, which are also part of the Johnston Press group.

A Paisley man, he joined the industry as a cub reporter and was chief reporter and then deputy editor of the Fife Herald in Cupar, Fife, prior to taking over at the Citizen in 2002.

CHALLENGE

Mike, who is married with three daughters, is a member of Cupar Burns Club, St Andrews Rotary Club and a past member of St Andrews Sailing Club.

He said this week: ‘‘I’ve been offered a new challenge, to which I’m looking forward.

‘‘I’ve always believed that a good local newspaper is an essential part of any lively community and I hope to build on the success of my predecessors while getting to know the area and the readership.’’
