A local Mackie Academy first year pupil has become the youngest person in Scotland to reach the top of Kilimanjaro.

Liam Byrne took on the challenge over the New Year with his dad, Mike, and expedition leader and another local to Kincardine and Mearns, Charlie Paton.

Michael Byrne posted on the Mearns Leader Facebook page this picture of the group at the top of Kilimanjaro.

The group started their challenge just before the end of 2013 and reached the top after five days of climbing.

Kilimanjaro is the highest peak in Africa, and the highest free-standing mountain in the world at 5895 metres or 19,341 feet above sea level.
