Mock trial team visit Holyrood

MACKIE Academy’s mock trial team were invited to the Scottish parliament in January.

Representatives from the Mock Trial team who competed in New York at the Empire Mock Trial competition in October 2012 - and were then memorably stranded by Hurricane Sandy - were invited to attend First Minister’s Question Time and to meet the Minister for Education, Alisdair Allan, MSP.

The opportunity came about following support the school had received from Alison McInnes MSP for the North East.

PERFORMANCE

The Minister for Education was interested to hear about the team’s performance in the Scottish, UK and USA competitions and was impressed by their ability to adapt between Scottish, English and American law and legal systems.

He was also interested to hear how the team members had coped with being stranded for so long due to the impact of the hurricane.

In a lively session of First Minister’s Questions Alex Salmond was quizzed on the referendum, compulsory redundancies in the police force and the delivery of new school and hospital projects across Scotland.

The team enjoyed the experience of watching democracy at work and the cut and thrust of the debate.
