Pavilion plans move a step forward
The ambitious project to create a new sports pavilion and associated facilities in Laurencekirk’s Memorial Park is making steady progress.
Denis Bell, who has driven the project on behalf of Mearns Community Council, reported to his council colleagues on a meeting held on January 17.
Mr Bell said they had now established the status of the Episcopal Church glebe which forms part of the park.
He said Aberdeenshire Council have the lease of the glebe until 2043. The only restrictions are that there should be no permanent buildings put up on it or anything of a commercial nature staged on it.
“We now have a fair idea of what we have and have not got to work with.
“We are looking to increase the area of the all weather pitch and the skatepark would like floodlighting to enable its use in the winter.
“Regarding the pavilion itself, none of the plans drawn up by architects covered everything we wanted.
“We have decided that we require two team changing rooms and two single changing rooms, a meeting room and external toilets.
“We also require between a minimum or 30 and a maximum of 45 car parking spaces.
“I contacted SportScotland for their views and was told that if we put in our preliminary project, they would appoint a project manager who would look at the design and give their opinion, making any tweaks as necessary.”
The next meeting of the pavillion committee will be in the middle of February.
Mr Jim Stuart added that it had been suggested that a canopy might be put over the all weather pitch to reduced light leakage from the floodlights.
