Progress is being made on the new £23million Mearns Academy Campus much to the delight of local policitians.

On a recent visit to the new Mearns Academy Community Campus, Nigel Don MSP was delighted to see so much progress on the building works.

Mr Don and two of the local councillors, Jean Dick and Dave Stewart, were given a tour by the school rector Ian Parkin along with Ian Cochrane, project manager for Lend Lease.

The new campus is planned to be finished in June next year and will house the school as well as space for a new police station, community library facilities and community rooms.

The 17-acre development on Aberdeen Road should be able to accommodate up to 840 pupils.

Nigel Don said: “As far as I can see at the moment the use of space is excellent and a community campus offers an exciting way forward for the whole community.

“Of course there will be a bit of upheaval to begin with as everyone gets used to the new facility, and I know there are some concerns in the local community as to how this will be managed.

“Given that Means Academy Community Campus is a flagship initiative for South Aberdeenshire I am quite certain that the Council will ensure, as far as possible, a smooth transition that Will allay any fears”

The project is funded through the council’s capital plan, with a contribution of £9.74m from the Scottish Futures Trust

Mearns councillor Jean Dick who accompied Nigel Don, found the progress on the new campus ‘encouraging’.

She said: “I was pleased to accompany Nigel Don MSP on his visit to the site of the new Mearns Academy Community Campus.

“It was encouraging to witness the progress of the new building, to see the classroooms and study areas take shape, and to experience the sense of space of the social and communal areas.

“I am confident that maximum use will be made of all facilities when the campus opens in August 2014.”
