Sgt Campbell wins cadet of the year

Stonehaven’s Air Training Cadet of the Year has received her prestigious trophy from the Lord Lieutenant of Kincardineshire.

Mrs Carol Kinghorn attended a recent parents’ evening and awards ceremony at the headquarters of 1297 (Stonehaven) Squadron ATC in Beachgate Lane.

The unit was inspected by the Lord Lieutenant prior to the presentation of awards, including the Burness Trophy for Cadet of the Year which went to Sergeant Jemma Campbell. The trophy is named after the squadron’s former commanding officer, Wing Commander Brian Burness.

Flt Lt Duncan Campbell officer commanding 1297 (Stonehaven) Squadron, said: “This has been the most strongly-contested award for a few years.

“Over the last year, Sergeant Campbell attained her Bronze Duke of Edinburgh award, Master Air Cadet Classification, Cadet One Hundred and was also selected as a member of the Corps shooting team.

“She represented the unit as a member of the squadron’s first aid, drill, athletics and shooting teams as well as taking part in many other commitments”.

Other prize winners on the evening were Cadet Martin Brown.who received the Craig Norman Memorial Trophy for swimming; the McNab Trophy for sporting achievement was awarded to Sergeant Christian Avis who also won the Philip Chalmers Memorial Trophy for marksmanship.

Four cadets from 1297 (Stonehaven) Squadron Air Training Corps have also been selected to compete in the Whistler Inter Service Smallbore rifle shooting competition.

They are Flight Sergeant Christian Avis, Sergeants Campbell and Kieran Macbeath and Cadet Ewan Matheson.

The Stonehaven cadets will be part of the Air Cadet Corps Team which will shoot in The Whistler Trophy.

The trophy is competed for by the top 40 cadets from each Corps -sea, army and air.
