Short-changed over fund

THE Mearns is being short-changed by just receiving £17,000 per annum through the Tullo Windfarm Community Fund, according to Mearns Community Council.

Jim Stuart said: "17,000 is not enough. I have heard of a windfarm down near Stirling where the whole profit from one of nine turbines has been given over to the community and that amounts to 135,000 per year."

Chairman David Nelson agreed saying: "They (the Tullo developers) are getting away with the minimum, it amounts to 0.5% (of the profit expected).

"Despite asking for advice we were never advised by anybody what we should expect from a windfarm fund."

Councillor George Carr said there were windfarms in which the community got involved, but the costs to the developers were high.

"There is no continuity across the region. Some windfarms have no community fund or planning gain at all."

Alan Mowat said they were not in a position of strength if Aberdeenshire Council continue to grant permission for windfarms as they do at the moment.

"What would be the point of us negotiating with a developer to give our support? Would it make any difference if we opposed them?"

Hilda Kerr said it was a shame that the public had so little power in these matters.
