What do public want?
MEARNS Community Council heard of the demise of the A2B dial-a-bus service at its monthly meeting.
Councillor George Carr said the service was being scrapped on the grounds of cost and the fact it was not being used.
"The railway station has been a great success, but obviously passengers are accessing the station by means other than the dial-a-bus service.
"We must now try to think outside the box on this one. Several issues have been raised with public transport like the types of buses, the times they run and the fact that buses are running empty.
"We must take the opportunity to ask for more research into what the public want.
"I feel we must look at the whole of the Mearns, including the coast to establish where people want to go. A bus service must be geared to the people who want to use it."
Chairman David Nelson said the recent youth survey highlighted the need for buses to get young people in to Laurencekirk in the evening and back home again at a reasonable time.
Later in the meeting, Alan Mowat raised the issue of school buses and asked who decides if a bus does not run because of snow and whether the contractor still got paid.
Councillor Jean Dick said it was a joint decision between the transport companies and the education service.
Councillor Carr added that in the health and safety conscious climate of today, it was unsurprising that buses did not run in bad weather.
