AN elderly woman was rushed to hospital on Monday morning after she was struck by a car in Stonehaven town centre.

The collision happened at around 11.30am at the pedestrian crossing in Allardice Street.

Grampian Police and paramedics attended the scene and the 87-year-old woman was rushed to hospital by ambulance accompanied by a police escort.

Police said the woman was seriously injured and was taken to accident and emergency at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.

The road was closed for more than five hours while investigations were carried out and a black Vauxhall Corsa car could be seen sitting on the road cordoned off with police tape.

WITNESSES

A number of people went to help the woman after the incident.

Witnesses reported that the car appeared to be travelling at about 5mph when the collision occured.

The pedestrian was said to have been thrown about three feet into the air.
