Work will begin on new Academy in summer

Work on the building of the new Mearns Awcademy is to start this summer.

This announcement follows Aberdeenshire Council appointing the five main contractors who will carry out work on the council’s multi-million pound building programme over the next three years.

Morrison construction, Lend Lease, Miller Construction, Robertson Construction and FMP have been appointed as contractors for an initiative which will see work on Schools, care homes and leisure centres take place across Aberdeenshire.

The announcement of work beginning on the site follows last week’s meeting of he Kincardine and Mearns area committee where parents’ concerns over the inclusion of unisex toilets in the new school plan were discussed.

During the meeting councillors on the committee were told that contractors had revisited the plans for the £25 million Mearns Academy following a public consultation which revealed parents’ concerns over the layout of the new school’s toilets.

It was explained to councillors that the plans had originally been for a unisex hand washing facility rather than a shared toilet block. The issue was raised as councillors discussed the outcome of the consultation into the development.

When discussing the development, Councillors were quick to praise the building of the new school. Councillor Peter Bellarby said: “This development is very welcome and long over due.”

The councillors’ main concern was the toilet situation. Councillor Tom Fleming said he felt there had been some confusion over the situation. It was decided at the committee last week that parents should be informed of the changes and so those in the Mearns area should now have been informed about the revised plans.
