The countdown is on for the opening of Stonehaven’s unique heated open air pool celebrating its 81st season.

Due to open on Saturday, May 30 at 11am the charity Friends of Stonehaven Open Air Swimming pool are looking for sponsorship.

Funds raised from sponsoring either a week or a midnight swim will be used to purchase additional safe, durable and attractive poolside furniture and other new equipment to enhance visitors’ experience of the Pool.

Friends’ Vice Chairman, David Culshaw said: “Sponsorship opportunities start at just £200 for a week early or late season and rise to £400 in high season and we are delighted that two award-winning local businesses have already signed up – The Bay Fish & Chips and Charles McHardy, butchers.

“Anyone interested in joining them can contact us via our website or through Elma McMenemy who is co-ordinating sponsorship this season – although make no mistake, Elma is also contacting local businesses direct.

“She can be reached on 01569 750700.”

Friends’ fundraising activities have resulted in a new, more user-friendly system for Pool lockers. Up to now, swimmers had to request a locker key from reception, for which they paid a £1 deposit.

David added: “With the old system, customers had to queue up twice – once to get their ticket and locker key and then again to return their key and reclaim their deposit. Inevitably, this caused log-jams on busy days and we also lost quite a few keys that way.

“Now we have installed new coin-return locks to the lockers, so that anyone with a £1 coin can use a locker and when they unlock it, the key is retained and their coin is returned.”
