A MUCHALLS woman is gearing up to tackle a fundraising cycle across Kenya in aid of three women’s cancer charities.
Penny Paton will cycle 400km in five days from Mount Kenya to the shores of Lake Victoria in February 2012 to raise money for three British charities – Breast Cancer Care, Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust and Ovarian Cancer Action.
The event – Women V Cancer – is organised by Action for Charity, and Penny will be taking part alongside other women of all ages and cycling abilities from around the UK.
And the coming months will see the occupational health screening technician embark on a fundraising drive to ensure that she meets her £3000 target.
She said: “Cycling is one of my passions, since early childhood. I just saw the event advertised and I thought, that’s for me. I decided straight away that I was going to do it - what better way to do my bit and help raise awareness and funds for three very worthwhile charities.
“These cancers are close to a lot of women’s hearts, everybody knows somebody who has been affected or who may well be affected by one of them. We’ve all got mothers, daughters, sisters, friends. It could affect any one of us at any time.”
Penny is no stranger to undertaking strenuous events to raise money for good causes, having previously raised £2500 alongside her husband Jim for the Gordon Dialysis Unit in Inverurie, by kayaking up the Great Glen from Fort William to Inverness in 2004.
Penny said: “I think raising the money will be the biggest challenge, although the heat and hydration will be difficult – I cycle a lot here but I’m not used to the sun. It is on and off road cycling and it will be a great way to see the country. I think it will be quite an emotional cycle, because everybody will be there for different reasons.”
The first event that Penny has organised is a race night in Muchalls Village Hall, on March 11, followed by a ceilidh in Stonehaven Town Hall on Saturday, April 2, with music provided by Ian Rennie. For more information and tickets, she can be contacted on 01569 731392.
