Public toilets in Kincardine and Mearns including Stonehaven and Fettercairn could close in a bid to save Aberdeenshire Council cash.

Auchenblae and St Cyrus could also see their public toilets close as part of the plan but funding has been identified to refurbish the public toilets in Laurencekirk with options under consideration.

Aberdeenshire Council currently operates 81 public toilets, costing almost £1m a year. The council is hopeful of agreeing ‘comfort partnerships’ where local business make their toilets available for use by the public and receive a small sum from the council.

It is hoped that the Fettercairn toilet on Main Street, the Auchenblae toilet on Mackenzie Avenue and St Cyrus site on Ecclesgreig Road could make use of a ‘comfort partnership’. The Stonehaven site at the beach front will not reopen for the summer season but could see a possibly community assest transfer.

Head of Property and Facilities Management, Allan Whyte, said: “The fact is, several of our facilities are in poor condition and a number are rarely used, and we have to make sure we are making the best use of the funding available.
