A meeting to assess support for the establishment of a Men’s Shed in Stonehaven will take place on Thursday, April 21 at 6.30pm at the Mackie Academy.

The Men’s Shed concept started in Australia in the 1990s where it was identified that retired men, ex–servicemen, men out of work, and those with disabilities who have “time” on their hands can become bored and isolated, often leading to an early death.

The Men’s Shed essentially is a place where men of all ages can come together to relax and socialise combined with the opportunity of making, restoring or repairing something. For this reason, the “shed” is split into two areas: - a workshop area and a social area.

Often, the work is for the good of the community and some sheds have an adjacent garden area with a Polytunnel.

The meeting will be addressed by Jason Schroeder who is founder and chairman of the Scottish Men’s Shed Association and the Aberdeenshire Voluntary Action Men’s Shed Development Officer.

Depending on the desires of the participants, the internal setup from one shed to another may be different.

However, a Men’s Shed would usually have workbenches, woodworking equipment and tools like a lathe, band saw, bench saws, router table, drill press, thicknesser/planer plus a range of woodworking tools. It could, as is the case with Inverurie, also contain a metal working workshop with lathe, milling machine, bench drill and a small blacksmith forge.

There are now Men’s sheds being set up, or in the process of being set up, across Aberdeenshire in Inverurie, Alford, Westhill, Ellon, Aberchirder, Portlethen, Huntly, Banchory and Peterhead and in many other towns across Scotland.

The intent of the meeting is to assess the interest in Stonehaven and to form a steering group to get the concept underway. All are welcome to attend the meeting, watch a short film and ask questions.
