This weekend Saturday, June 27 heralds the 39th Drumtochty Games, held in the Castle Grounds near Auchenblae.

It was in 1977 that the Queen’s Silver Jubilee local committee held the first Games and now is very much part of Scotland’s annual highland games circuit and draws competitors and spectators from around the globe.

The Games starts at 11am with the novice heavies events and will be officially opened at 2pm by a trio of Chieftains – Jenny Thomson, Alice Morgan and Geena Easter.

These ladies have just retired after a combined service of 75 years on the Auchenblae Community Association.

The finest international heavy athletes compete for the Glenfiddich Championship along side youngsters jousting in childrens races. There is a full programme of highland dancing, light events, solo piping and pipe bands – Lonach, Newtonhill and Mearns.

The Drum Majors compete in the Mace Flourishing event for the Fettercairn Distillery Trophy.

The tug- o-war is one of the great spectator attractions and this year there will be the traditional 725 kgs event but the committee have also introduced a six man 480 kgs to attract lighter pullers into the sport.

The gruelling Finella Hill Race continues to attract runners looking for a challenge . Despite the retiral of the three Chieftains, the Auchenblae Community Association continues to provide wonderful traditional food which also has a global attraction.

In addition there are many fine trade stands and local charity stalls competing for funds. The Glen of Drumtochty is one of Scotland’s hidden gems and the Committee, under the chairmanship of John Singer, would like to thank Charles and Dorothy Anderson for the annual use of the Castle policy fields and to Barry Holton for the car park.
