Girls from Stonehaven joined in a Guiding event held in three separate venues around the town on Saturday, September 13.

It was open to all Rainbows (5-7 year olds), Brownies (7-10 year olds), Guides (10-14 year olds), Senior Section (14-25 year olds) and adult volunteers.

The activities organised were all taken from the Girlguiding Scotland ‘Let’s Grow’ Challenge Badge, designed to help to grow the movement in the area.

The girls had fun doing different crafts and activities including designing a plant pot and planting bulbs to give to a friend, learning to tie friendship knots, designing Girlguiding posters and learning about different aspects of Girlguiding.

Amber Inglis, from Girlguiding Kincardine and Deeside, said: “Girlguiding is very active in Stonehaven, with lots of weekly unit meetings taking place for all ages of girls.

‘‘We are in need of more volunteers though. There are lots of girls on waiting lists because there are not enough places available for everyone who wants to join.’’

‘‘Girls across Stonehaven are continuing to actively participate in activities such as creating posters and radio adverts, inviting friends and family to get involved, all aimed at encouraging more people to volunteer to help run our weekly meetings.”

Matters are even more critical in Portlethen, with leaders there saying that an entire new unit is needed to accommodate the huge waiting list for Rainbows, many of whom miss out as they are old enough to go straight to Brownies by the time they get to the top of the waiting list.

Assistant Rainbow leader Sarah Cutler-Howie, said: “The schools in Portlethen are fit to bursting and, with the huge increase in the number of children, the waiting list for Rainbows has become very long.”

Anyone can become a leader, and it takes up a couple of hours per week. No previous experience or training is necessary. Anyone who is interested in finding out more about becoming a Leader can visit http://www.girlguiding.org.uk/get_involved/volunteer/register_your_interest.aspx
