An ex-Stonehaven resident has written a book, inspired by his experiences in the town with the Mackie Rugby Club.

Douglas Bruce, formerly of Robert Street, was captain and later president of Mackie Academy FPRFC twice.

After he left Stonehaven in 1997, he took up the post of general manager of Heriot’s Rugby Club in Edinburgh, which he continued until 2005, when he and his late wife, Rosemary, moved to Skye.

He said: “I started to write a book in 2004 at the suggestion of my wife about my rugby experiences many of which were in Stonehaven with Mackie.

“Iain The Bear Milne, an honorary member of Mackie and capped 42 times for Scotland, very kindly wrote the foreword and although there is quite a lot of Heriot stories in the book I have also included a great deal about Mackie.”

The book, ‘Wrapped in Rugby,’ is available from Amazon, and Douglas says that it would make a great Christmas present.

If you were involved with the Rugby Club you may even find tales about yourself in the pages!

Douglas added: “During my time at Mackie we used to run great dinners and many of the most famous Scottish rugby players graced our top table.

“We even had Fran Cotton of England one year and the great Welsh scrum half, Gareth Edwards, came up to Stonehaven from Cardiff to be our main dinner speaker.

“Thanks to Mackie I met many a rugby celebrity.”
