JOHNSHAVEN Athletic can be extremely satisfied with the Aberdeenshire Amateur League season just ended. They finished joint fifth in Division One East, tied on points with neighbours Bervie Caley, which was an improvement on their eighth place finish in Division One North the season before.

Johnshaven were hard to beat at home as always, but their five home league wins all came against sides from the bottom half of the table.

Their best result at home, against one of the top half teams, was a 2-2 draw against Bervie.

Athletic took more points away than they did at home and will be pleased with wins on their travels against Bervie, Postal and Frigate and a 2-2 draw with Mill Inn at Stonehaven.

Johnshaven's full league record was: Banchory L1-6 (h) L0-4 (a); Bon-Accord City L1-3 (h) L1-3 (a); Kintore L1-4 (h) L1-2 (a); AC Mill Inn L0-2 (h) D2-2 (a); Bervie D2-2 (h) W2-1 (a); Postal L0-3 (h) W3-0 (a); Frigate L1-2 (h) W3-1 (a).

Theologians W2-1 (h) W3-0 (a); Lads' Club L2-3 (h) W4-2 (a); Potterton W7-2 (h) D2-2 (a); Glendale W6-2 (h) L1-3 (a); Rattray's X1 W3-1 (h) D1-1 (a); Uni Strollers W2-1 (h) W3-1 (a).

Johnshaven had a home record of W5 D1 L7 F28 A32 Pts16 and an away record of W6 D3 L4 F26 A22 Pts21 for an overall W11 D4 L11 F54 A54 Pts37.

Banchory were champions with Bon-Accord City promoted in second. Glendale, Rattray's X1 and University Strollers went down.

Johnshaven had super runs in a couple of cup competitions, most notably the Scottish Amateur Cup.

They saw off Monymusk after a replay in the first round, then Premier Division Burghmuir, also after a replay, in round two.

Another Premier side, Glentanar, were beaten 2-1 at Johnshaven in round three, then the adventure ended with a narrow 4-3 defeat at home to Garnethill.

In the Association Cup, there were home wins over Postal (4-1) and Glentanar (4-2), then Premier Division Beacon Rangers squeezed home 2-1 at Wairds Park in round three.

The AFC Trophy saw a 3-2 defeat at Banchory and the North of Scotland Cup saw a disappointing 2-0 home defeat against Division Two team Ellon Thistle.

In the White Cup, Potterton were thumped 5-2, then there was a disappointing 3-2 defeat against lowly University Strollers in the quarter-final.

Johnshaven scored 33 goals in cup competition, giving them a total of 87 for the season.

Dave McKay was top scorer with 19 goals and he was followed by Jason Leven with 12, Scott Beedie and Gary Bickerstaff with seven and Stuart McDonald and Gavin Buist with five.

Other tallies were: Craig Lownie, Leon Dundas and Luke Myers with four, Dale Calder with three, Dane Dundas, Craig Strachan, Grant McPherson and Aaron Welsh with two and Ross Blease, Shaun Blease, Gourlay, Simmons-Riach, Greig and Gunnis all with one. There were three own-goals.
