Old Aberdonians 0 NEWTONHILL faced one of the title contenders last Wednesday night and came away with a massive three points to boost their own title ambitions. The Hill were playing off the back of a disappointing 2-0 defeat two nights previously to Lads Club and were intent on getting things back on track.
Newtonhill’s first chance came in the 15th minute when an M. Brooks corner was headed off the bar by Keith. The rebound dropped to Carmichael who then saw his header from a few yards out also come crashing off the underside of the bar before another attempt was blocked on the line.
It was certainly not Carmichael’s night as just minutes later he rounded the keeper only to see his attempt come back off the inside of the post. The rebound fell slightly behind Barazza whose effort was blocked on the line by an Old Aberdonians defender.
The second half followed the same pattern as the first with the Hill pinning Old Aberdonians back into their own half. Finally the breakthrough came on the hour mark when a delightful, defence splitting pass by M. Brooks put Barazza clean through on goal and the striker calmly rounded the keeper before finishing from an acute angle.
The chances were now coming thick and fast for the Hill as they looked to finish off the game. Firstly M. Brooks was unlucky to see his goalbound header turned over the bar by the keeper. S. Christie was next to threaten when he burst into the box before his low effort was turned round the post.
with 10 minutes remaining, determined work from Keith resulted in his cutback being ballooned over the bar from 6 yards by Johnstone with the goal gaping.
The game was finally laid to rest with just minutes reaming when a terrific run from Carmichael down the right channel was found by a long raking ball by Cameron. The midfielder then fired in a low cross that was coolly dispatched by Keith from 6 yards out sending the Newtonhill faithful into raptures. Newtonhill: Farquhar, Cameron, Alexander, Foy, T. Smith, Milsom, Carmichael, M. Brooks, Stewart, Johnstone, Keith, Barazza. Subs: S. Christie, Shanks, Hay, Blacklaws, Moir.
