Competition heating up at Stoney Golf Club

Competition is starting to heat up in both singles and doubles sections at Stonehaven Golf Club as some competitors can now start knocking off some of their poorer scores once they have reached ten qualifying scores.

In the singles section there were fourteen players with 36 points or more. Derek Freeland led the way with an excellent 43 points. Following close behind was Brian Reid with 42 points.

In the doubles scratch section Gordon Adamson and Glennie Melvin had the lowest score with a 62. They pipped Neil Irvine by one stroke. Neil’s partner, Harry Roulston is getting close to returning to competition play after his recent operation so he should be lean, mean and raring to go. Other scores under par were Stewart Allsop & Brian Lawson with a 64 and Fiona & Gordon Lamont with a 65.

In the doubles handicap section Stewart and Brian were joined at the top by Kenny Duncan & Ian Wood with a nett 57. They were closely followed by Gordon Adamson & Glennie Melvin and Joe & Rose Riddell with a nett 58.

Members will be saddened to hear about the sudden death of Mrs Mary Carnegy. Mary was a member of our Club for many years, during which she served as Captain of the Ladies’ Section in 1987/88.

This coincided with the period her late husband, Jim, was Captain for the second time during the Club’s Centenary Celebrations, making history by being the first husband and wife to serve their respective terms of office at the same time. Although latterly Mary was unable to play golf, she took a keen interest in the Club and always supported the social activities of the Ladies’ Section. Our thoughts go to the family.
