Cup win for Luthermuir

Don Athletic 1 Luthermuir 2 LUTHERMUIR travelled to Aberdeen for a North of Scotland Cup second round tie on Saturday, their first game in nine weeks due to the adverse weather conditions.

The match started with both teams looking rusty from the break.

Luthermuir created the first chance in 15 minutes when McCombie's effort was saved by the home keeper and his follow-up volley saw the keeper somehow react to turn the ball over the bar.

Greig was next to threaten when he broke into the left hand side of the box before cutting the ball back and Fotheringham had his effort blocked for another corner.

Stuart Lindsay's through ball was brought down by McCombie in 30 minutes but a defender again got back to block.

Luthermuir finally broke the deadlock in 35 minutes when Neil Arthur broke down the right and his low centre was fired goalwards by Duff.

The keeper made an excellent save, a home defender handled the ball on the ground before it squirmed free and Scott McCombie slammed the loose ball into the net.

Luthermuir had dealt with Don Athletic pretty comfortably but there was a warning just five minutes from the break when a dangerous cross was hacked clear by Neil Arthur.

Luthermuir failed to heed the warning and lost a goal with the last kick of the half. A long throw was tossed into the Luthermuir box and Neil Arthur succeeded in volleying the ball off the hand of Stuart Lindsay for a penalty award to the home side. Howe got a hand to the spot kick but the ball crept into the net.

The second half was really scrappy with Luthermuir looking the more likely side. Luthermuir scored what proved to be the winner in 70 minutes when Duff rab on to Mark Robertson's pass and, with McCombie dragging the defenders away, Duff smashed a low 25 yarder into the corner of the net.

Luthermuir almost tied the game up with 15 to play when McCombie was played clean through but the ball held up on a muddy part of the pitch and he could not get any power in his shot.

Howe then made an excellent save with 10 minutes left, blocking a dangerous effort.

There was one late scare for Luthermuir when a cross was looped to the back post, but Gordon Lindsay cleared the headed effort off the line.

Luthermuir created the final chance with seconds to go when Neil Arthur drove an effort over the bar.

Luthermuir: Howe, Morrison, G. Lindsay, S. Lindsay, S. Robertson, M. Robertson, N. Arthur, Duff, S. McCombie, Fotheringham (Walker), Greig. Sub: Hall.
