Duff at the double

Newtonhill 1 Luthermuir 2 LUTHERMUIR travelled to Newtonhill last Wednesday, determined to do better defensively than in the recent 6-6 draw between the teams.

Luthermuir started brightly and Murdoch Anderson and Scott McCombie both went close before Gordon Lindsay headed away from under his own crossbar in 15 minutes.

Luthermuir opened the scoring in 30 minutes when Euan Duff headed the ball home from Murdoch Anderson's corner.

Five minutes later and Duff had a second goal, this time heading powerfully home a Greig corner.

Fotheringham and Greig went close to extending the lead before half time.

Luthermuir were well warned about a second half fightback from Newtonhill and the home side started the second half in whirlwind fashion. Howe made an excellent block in 50 minutes with Stuart Lindsay completing the clearance.

Luthermuir missed a couple of half chances before the home keeper made an excellent save to keep his side in the game. Neil Arthur split the defence with a pass to Murdoch Anderson. The keeper came out and Anderson was forced wide. Anderson looked up and crossed to the onrushing Duff who headed powerfully down to the bottom corner but the keeper somehow got across goal to tip the ball round the post.

Newtonhill got a goal back in 70 minutes when a long hopeful clearance upfield was lost in the air by Howe allowing a home forward to slide the ball into the net.

The Luthermuir goal had a let off in 80 minutes when the ball ricocheted in the box and went a foot past the post.

Newtonhill had one last chance when they were awarded a free kick 20 yards from goal but the wall stood firm to gain a vital three points for Luthermuir.

Luthermuir: Howe, Darar, G. Lindsay, S. Lindsay, S. Robertson, Duff (Walker), N. Arthur, Fotheringham, M. Anderson, S. McCombie, Greig. Subs: Hall, M. Robertson, D. Anderson, Glover.
